Bullying has always been a huge challenge, it has however just picked up in the last few years. This is but one challenge found in schools, besides the main discipline issues. Having dialogue, does not always mean to have support groups which learners often dread to stay committed to. Perhaps in the classroom opening an anonymous box, where things like bullying and all the other issues the school face can be addressed. So the learners then identify the challenges themselves and as a general discussion working together with the class to delve into reasons for the occurrence and possible solutions. This creates an awareness and learners will then often think twice before finding themselves guilty of being bullies for example.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea , Tertia. I like the idea of anonymity and the idea of having general discussions about bullying . This opens up the discussion regarding the "why" of the issue of bullying and how it can be addressed.
ReplyDeleteI think the important thing to focus on is getting learners to think about language and how they communicate. Often words become normalised , such as cuss words and referring to body parts as insults-which also speaks to gender bias and power.
To me the idea of dialogos (deliberate engagement) is very well displayed through the Socratic method and circle. This probes the learners to think about why they think a certain why, which is helpful with stereotypes and name-calling because when one asks "why" you begin to see the logic or lack of behind the words.
