I really feel this quote speaks to the idea of activating schemas , mentioned in the newspaper article. This speaks to the idea that the teacher has to know the learners and try to look at where there ZPD is and activating prior knowledge. Within the boundaries of CAPS, looking at a South African perspective we see how this quote is extremely challenging.
ReplyDeleteIt is challenging, bringing the identities of learners and the teacher into the learning space as curriculums are quite generalised. This is where the teacher and student can misplace their identity in the space and in the process . The identity is always there, it is just whether it is recognised or not. This speaks to the idea of "inclusion" or "exclusion".
DeleteWe do see the limits of CAPS in ensuring dialogue, love and potentiality in the classroom. This is often due the fact that although this curriculum is learner-centered, it is also outcome based. This in the same way that it limits teachers to reach their full pedagogical potential it limits learners potential, In this I am emphasizing that the curriculum should not be the only we educate children in our classrooms.
DeleteWe love them, build friendships with them, and then we move towards their potential. There is this profound quote saying : They do not care what you know, until they know you care.
This should be our point of departure when teaching CAPS, learners are not mere objects of education they are the reason we teach.

DeleteThis is so challenging! oh my I feel like it all just seem challenging lol (Mind my language). My teacher always use to say : " ek gee my duim dan vat julle die hele hand". I am afraid that there is a fine line with regards to "friendship". One can be friendly but everyone is not you friend, especially not in the teacher learner relationship. Some teenagers can be very manipulative, especially in that phase of their lives. Burn-out seems to be my red light when i think of a zoomed in approach like this.
